Volleyball Advice for Beginners

Beginner Volleyball Player

Volleyball players who are just beginning will have a great time with other campers and develop their game at one of our summer day camps!

When your child starts playing volleyball, it’s important to be supportive. Finding the balance between support and constructive instruction is vital for young players. Whether your child is playing on their first team or participating in their first volleyball day camp, always find the balance in pushing your athlete to their potential while keeping the focus on having fun.

  1. Be a Role Model - Being a good role model for your young athlete is important for building healthy habits and a good attitude. Eating healthy and exercising is an easy way to demonstrate good habits. In addition to healthy lifestyle habits, always display sportsmanship in the stands when your child is playing in a practice or volleyball game.

  2. Encourage Balance - When a younger player is just beginning, over training can become overwhelming. Although practice is important, making sure your beginner volleyball player still finds time for school, friends, and other activities. Not only is it healthy to encourage balance, but the chances of becoming a professional athlete are very slim. Encouraging interest in other activities and academics will create a great balance in their day to day life.

  3. Have Fun - If your athlete isn’t enjoying playing volleyball, then they are more likely to quit playing. Yes, sports are competitive, but always emphasize the fun of learning.

Bonus Tip: Coaches Advice for beginners!

  1. “For those players just getting started in volleyball always remember that two important factors will be your attitude and effort level. A great outlook and excellent work effort will help you improve quickly even if you're not the most talented or the tallest player.” - Merry Graf, Head Coach and Nike Volleyball Camp Director at Webster University, St Louis

  2. “Be a good learner, soak it all up, and be a great teammate!” - Jesse Zabal, Head Coach and USSC Volleyball Camp Director at Loyola New Orleans
