A three-sport athlete in college, Austin played basketball and football at Texas Tech before transferring to No. 1-ranked Univ. of Hawai'i for volleyball in 2004. He graduated from Texas Tech in Dec. 2005 with a B.A. in Journalism and a minor in Spanish. Upon graduating, in March of 2006, he made his dream of pursuing professional beach volleyball a reality by loading up everything he had and driving from Dallas to LA. Within months of moving to LA, Austin quickly became an up-and-coming big man on the AVP and was runner-up for Rookie of the Year in 2006. Austin then spent 4 straight years as a mainstay on the AVP, with his most successful season being his last in 2010, as he finished the season as a top-20 player on tour. Austin then turned his sights to indoor volleyball and spent 3 of the last 4 years playing Outside Hitter professionally in Bulgaria, Puerto Rico and Argentina. Austin also has had various stints in the last 4 years training with our USA National Team, as recently as November 2013.
Apart from playing, the last 10 years Austin has dedicated his time to coaching and giving back to the game that he loves. He began with coaching in college as a student assistant for the Texas Tech women's volleyball program for 3 years. Every year since, he has coached in some form or fashion, whether it be professional, college, club or high school volleyball. Austin has the innate ability to teach both the technical and analytical sides of volleyball, while simultaneously keeping the game fun. Austin has coached a wide variety of levels from beginners, to current AVP professionals, and everywhere in between--meetings each player where they're at and building upon that foundation in a way that is most accessible to them.
Austin currently coaches the two-time, Junior Olympics medal-winning 18-1s COAST Volleyball Club Girls team, and the 16-1s COAST Boys team that is among the best in the SoCal region and will compete in the Junior Olympics this year.
