3 skills to improve when fielding with numbers

Baseball Fielding1

As an infielder, it is always important to watch the ball into the glove when fielding grounders. Doing this can minimize the chance for errors. The number drill is a great way to practice watching the ball go into the mitt.

With a bucket of balls, label each ball with a different number. Make sure the numbers are big enough to read. Use this bucket to hit grounders. Field the ball normally and make a play to the nearest base. After each play, say the number that was on the ball. This fielding drill will help baseball players with:

  1. Keeping the head down
  2. Watching the ball into the mitt
  3. Transitioning from ground to the throwing position

Repeat this process every practice. The more repetitions done, the easier grounders and bad hops will be during a game.
