How to Prepare for a Field Hockey Game

Preparing For Field Hockey Game

The day before a big match can sometimes be nerve wracking. Making sure your uniform is properly laid out, your lucky hair tie is ready to go, or that your music playlist is ready to be played first thing in the morning, are all things that can help get you ready for competition. To ensure your game goes great, follow these five field hockey pre-game tips recommended by Nike Field Hockey Camps.

1. Have a well-balanced dinner.

Having a well-balanced dinner will allow your body to receive the proper nutrients and energy storage for the next day. Eat lean proteins such as chicken or fish. While red meat is delicious, you might want to stay away from it due to the high amount of saturated fat it contains. Continue to eat your fruits and vegetables because they contain high amounts of energy. If you would like to consume carbohydrates, make sure it is complex carbs such as whole wheat or brown rice. White bread and white pasta are not a good source due to the few nutrients they provide the body. Healthy fats like coconut oil and avocado oil are also great sources of nutritious food. If you stay healthy and eat great food beforehand, you body will feel energized in the morning rather than fatigued.

2. Hydrate

Always be consistently drinking water throughout the day. It is important that you at least hydrate 24 hours beforehand and stop drinking any caffeine or sugary drinks that will make your body feel lethargic. You should drink a half ounce to an ounce of water for every pound of body weight.

3. Visualize

Imagine yourself making perfect passes, flicks, and hits. Your body has “mirror neurons” that fire the same movement you are visualizing. Just thinking of these moments will help you become confident the next day. Being confident will keep you motivated if the game becomes tough.

4. Have a Good Sleep

Getting ample amount of sleep will not only help you mentally, but physically as well. You want to wake up feeling refreshed and ready for a game. Not getting enough sleep could cause you to feel tired faster and your reaction time slower.

5. Have a Good Warm Up

Your coach will have you perform static and dynamic stretching exercises needed before the game, and it is important to do them correctly. Not stretching properly could lead to cramps or injuries during the middle of the game. Focus during these warm ups and keep visualizing great plays you will make and proper technique.

Use this guide to help you through your next big match against your rival team.
