Over the past 8 seasons at American River College, the Defense under Lou Baiz continued the strong tradition of stingy and opportunistic defense. In 2014 the defense finished top 10 within the state in all meaningful statistical categories including rushing yards per game (75.7), Interceptions (20) and defensive touchdowns (7). In 2015 American River College’s defense again led the Nor-Cal conference in the majority of defensive categories. In 2016 American River College produced a strong defense posting 2 shutouts and leading the conference in points against with 13.1 per game and played their best defense in their State Championship run. In 2017 the defensive unit led the conference in several defensive statistics, finishing 9th in the state in passing defense and 13th in the state in scoring defense. The 2018 defense was 6th in Nor Cal in scoring defense and 8th in interceptions. In 2019 the defense finished 4th in Nor Cal scoring defense and 9th in Pass Defense.

Baiz has coached 13 All Conference Linebackers, 4 All State and two Defensive Player of the year in Rahsaan York and Cian Slone. The list of All Conference Linebackers Austin Paulhus, Lawrence Hall, Jordan Kunaszyk, Jim Carter Jake Bellecci, George Spithorst, Justin Houlihan, Kiko Moreno, Donovan Laban, Luke Afato, Josh Tremain and Rahsaan York a two time All Conference player. Both York with Kunaszyk earning All Conference and All State honors, and Kunaszyk receiving All American honors . In 2017 Rahsaan York was named the Defensive MVP of Nor Cal Conference and the Defensive Player of the Year in the State of California. He also developed and placed 12 scholarship Linebackers.

During his time at Sacramento State, 32 of his players have earned all-Big Sky honors. That list includes five players who earned the honor in 2009. He has also coached six All-Americans (Ryland Wickman, Anthony Daisley, Matt Logue, Cyrus Mulitalo, Brent Webber, and Mike Brannon) and 12 Big Sky all-academic selections.

Baiz also served as the Hornets’ defensive coordinator from 2006-2009. In his first year, he guided a unit which was one of the most effective in the Big Sky. Among the eight players that were named all-conference were a pair of linebackers who were taught directly by Baiz. Mulitalo earned honorable mention All-America honors after recording a team-high 120 tackles, including 11.5 for loss. Safety Brent Webber was also named third team All-American after ranking second in Div. I - AA with six interceptions. The following year, the team had eight players named all-Big Sky. Mulitalo and Brannon also garnered All-America honors from The Sports Network.

In 2008, Sacramento State led the Big Sky in rushing defense after allowing just 99.1 yards per game against conference foes. The team also ranked second in total defense, giving up 353.8 yards per game in Big Sky play. Individually, Mulitalo and Brannon each earned honorable mention All-America honors and defensive tackle Dallas Mauga joined the two on the all-Big Sky first team.

After one season of working with the defensive ends, Baiz returned to coaching the linebackers in 2004. Under his watch, both Jimmy Ellingson and Logue were named second team all-Big Sky. Ellingson ended the season with 132 total tackles while Logue tallied 89 to rank as the team’s top two tacklers. In 2005, Logue totaled 105 tackles and was named the co-Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year.

Baiz spent three years working in the San Diego State program as a graduate assistant before joining the Sacramento State staff in 1994. A native of Claremont, CA, Baiz worked with the offensive line, tight ends and linebackers in his time at San Diego State. The 1991 Aztecs finished 8-4 and earned a berth in the Freedom Bowl.

The Most Inspirational Player for Sacramento State in 1990, Baiz joined the Hornets in 1998 from Citrus College and was a standout linebacker for strong prep teams at Claremont High School.

He graduated from Sacramento State in 1991 with a degree in social science. Baiz added a Master’s degree in Recreation Administration from Sacramento State in June of 1999. He and his wife, Brooke, are the parents of 16-year old twins, Reece and Shea.

2022 Season (8-4, Nor-Cal Conference Champions, State Playoffs)

• American River College continued its dominance with its 3rd consecutive Nor-Cal Championship & return to Northern California Championship game. Defeated Laney College in the 1st round of state playoffs 43-21 before losing to eventual state champion San Mateo in the Northern California Championship game.
• 13 players earned all Nor-Cal Conference 1st team honors, 5 player were named All-Region, and 3 Beavers were named 1st team All-American (Grayson Barnes- TE, Robert Freeman IV- Ret Spec, Cian Slone- DE) with defensive end Cian Slone being named Defensive Player of the Year
• Nor-Cal Conference Coach of the year and team finished ranked #5
• 22 student-athletes in the class signed scholarships and are continuing their education at four year institutions.

2021 Season (6-5, Nor-Cal Conference Champions, State Playoffs)

• American River College advanced to the California Community College regional playoffs for the 5th time in seven years.
• 11 players earned Nor-Cal Conference 1st team honors with offensive linemen Sedrick Luke being named Offensive MVP of the conference. 6 players were named to the All-Region, and Sedrick Luke was a unanimous 1st team All-American selection
• Nor-Cal Conference Coach of the year and team finished ranked #9 in California.
• 28 student-athletes moved onto four year institutions across the country to reach their aspirations in athletics and academics.

2020 Season (canceled due to Covid-19 restrictions)

2019 Season (8-3, Nor-Cal Conference Champions, State Playoffs)

• Nor-Cal Conference Coach of the Year
• ARC concluded the season with a final ranking of 6th in the state.
• 13 players earned Nor-Cal Conference 1st team honors, 7 players were named to the Region 1 first team, while linebacker George Spithorst and Return Specialist Eric Davis were both named 1st team All-America
• 30 former student-athletes matriculated onto four-year universities with 12 players at the Division 1 FBS and FCS level.

2018 Season (7-4, Gridiron Bowl)

• ARC finished with a final ranking of 13th in the state of California as they went 5-1 down the stretch.
• 10 players earned Nor-Cal Conference 1st team honors and two, Eric Davis (WR/Punt Returner), and Trey Price (Offensive Line) were named to the All-Region Team.
• The program continued its movement of former student-athletes to four-year institutions as 20 players moved on to play and continue their education.

2017 Season (10-2, Nor-Cal Conference Champions)

• ARC continued its dominance on a national level as they were crowned the Nor-Cal Conference Champions and advanced to the Northern California Championship game after defeating Laney College in the first round of the playoffs 41-35 at home, before losing to San Mateo 24-21 in the semifinals.
• Finished with the #3 ranking in the 2017 JC Athletic Bureau California State Football Poll
• The football program had 13 representatives on the Nor-Cal Conference 1st team, 5 players were named Region 1 first team, Rahsaan York (LB) earned California Defensive MVP, and Diego Cervantes (C) earned All-American honors.
• The matriculation of the 2017 football team had 31 players move onto four-year universities to continue as student-athletes across the country.

2016 Season (10-3, Nor-Cal Conference Champions, #6 in nation)

• The Beavers returned to the California State Championship game for the first time in 50 years, losing to Fullerton College in the title game, 27-21.
• Finished the season #2 in the California Community College Football poll and #6 Nationally by the JC Football.com/JC Grid-Wire Poll.
• 9 players received all-conference honors, with 2, Anthony Luke (DE) and Damen Wheeler (WR/RET) earning All-American recognition.
• Matriculation of student-athletes in Osterhout’s program continued as 18 players have left the program to compete at the NCAA level, including 13 players at the Division 1 FBS and FCS level.

2015 Season (7-4, Nor-Cal Conference Co-Champions)

• The Beavers continued their national prominence in 2015 with defeating eventual National Champions City College of San Francisco on the road in week four.
• 11 student-athletes were awarded all-conference first team honors and the Nor-Cal Conference Defensive Player of the year award was given for the second year in a row to the Beavers as linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk (Cal) took home the hardware, while Kunaszyk and fellow defensive linemen Nick Terry (UCLA) were also named to the 2015 All-State and All-American team.
• 21 players from this squad continued their education and dream of playing football at the four-year level, including 5 to power five conferences.

2014 Season (10-2, Nor-Cal Conference Co-Champions, #10 in nation)

• Osterhout took over the helm of ARC Football on January 27, 2014 and led the team to a 10-2 record, #4 ranking in the state and #10 nationally.
• Coach O was named Nor-Cal Conference Co-Coach of the Year.
• The team held the unanimous #1 ranking in the state after knocking off previously #1 ranked San Francisco City and #1 ranked San Mateo JC in back-to-back weeks.
• 9 players were named to the Nor-Cal League 1st team which included defensive player of the year Jordan Carrell (Colorado) who was also a unanimous All-State and All-American selection.
• To cap off his first season at the helm, Osterhout and his staff placed 21 of 25 sophomores to four-year schools to continue their career as student-athletes.

2011 - 2013 Seasons

• In 2013 Osterhout took over the offensive play calling duties for a unit that finished 5th in the state in scoring, 7th in rushing and 8th in total offense the prior season.
• Osterhout’s offensive unit averaged 34.6 points per game and averaged 386.4 yards of total offense, shattering numerous offensive records and helped lead them to their first undefeated season in 2011 and 2 NorCal Championship games.
