USC head women's soccer coach Jane Alukonis announced the addition of Shigeyoshi “Sugar” Shinohara as an assistant coach on the Trojan soccer staff on April 22.

Shinohara came to USC after serving as an assistant at Arizona State for the past five seasons.

“I couldn’t be more grateful to have Sugar join our coaching staff,” said Alukonis. “Sugar is an extremely special human. His coaching and mentorship will have a lifelong impact on our student-athletes. Sugar is a teacher at heart, super intelligent, and has an especially enthusiastic and positive coaching demeanor. I can’t wait for the players to experience his high-energy delivery and everyday passion for life. He spreads joy everywhere he goes.

“Sugar was a big part of ASU’s recent success and I owe a huge thank you to Head Coach Graham Winkworth for his openness and selflessness in the process. To Sugar and his wife Arin, welcome to the Trojan Family!”

Shinohara helped lead the Sun Devils to winning seasons three of the five years he was there and helped guide the program to its first postseason appearance since 2014 when ASU made the NCAA Tournament in 2020, picking up the program’s fifth postseason win that season. During his tenure, ASU also produced its first All-American since 2002, when Nicole Douglas earned third-team honors in 2021.

“Firstly, I would like to thank Ray Anderson, and all of Sun Devil Athletics, for giving me the opportunity to work at Arizona State,” said Shinohara. “I would particularly like to thank Graham (Winkworth), Jo (Chubb), and all past and present players for a wonderful five and a half years as a Sun Devil.

“Moving forward, I am both humbled and excited for this great opportunity to become a part of such a decorated program. I would like to thank President Carol Folt, Director of Athletics Mike Bohn, Lindsay Jaffe and Coach Alukonis for inviting me to be a part of the Trojan Family. After meeting with Coach Alukonis and her staff, learning their visions for the program moving forward, and meeting with the student-athletes, my wife Arin and I are increasingly excited about this new chapter. I cannot wait to get to Los Angeles to get started.”

Shinohara joined the ASU staff from Brevard College (Brevard, North Carolina) where he spent eight seasons – seven seasons as head coach of the women's program (2009-15) and one season as head coach of the men's program (2016).

In his only season leading the men's program, Shinohara led Brevard to its best season since joining the NCAA, as it finished 8-8-3. Included among the achievements was one of the biggest upsets in program history when it defeated eventual 2016 NCAA Division II national champions Wingate, 1-0, in the quarterfinal round of the South Atlantic Conference tournament.

Under Shinohara's direction, the women's program earned a berth in the South Atlantic Conference tournament for the first time in school history and set the school record for consecutive wins. Off the field, his team's 3.51 cumulative GPA was the second highest in the Brevard Athletics Department.

Prior to assuming the reins at Brevard, Shinohara served as an assistant coach at the University of Montevallo from 2005-09 under head coach Patricia Hughes. During his time at Montevallo, Shinohara was heavily involved in recruiting and the overall operation of the women's soccer program. He was part of a staff that led the women's soccer team to an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance and the Gulf South Conference Tournament title in 2007. UM was also a Gulf South Conference Tournament finalist in 2008.

Shinohara started his coaching career in Yamaguchi, Japan where he was the assistant for the Seiki Football Club of a group aged 10-16 from 1994-2001. From there, he moved to the United Soccer Academy where he was responsible for the day-to-day administrative operations as well as being a full-time coach where he coached one-on-one sessions with youth players.

In addition to his collegiate work, Shinohara was a member of both the Alabama Olympic Developmental Program (2005-09) and the North Carolina Olympic Developmental Program (2009-16). In that role he was responsible for evaluating and training players, as well as coaching in spring and summer camps in the district and state.

Shinohara holds an NSCAA Premier Diploma and an Advanced National Diploma as well as the F.A. Coaching License and the UEFA "B" Award International Coaching License from the Football Association in England. Most recently, he also added a National B License and a National Youth License from the U.S. Soccer Federation.

Sundly spent the last few seasons as an assistant coach for the UC Davis men's soccer team where he helped lead the Aggies to two Big West Tournament berths and a semifinals appearance in 2021. During his tenure, the Aggies had 11 Big West All-Conference selections and saw a student-athlete in Maximillian Arfsten taken 14^th overall in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft.
Prior to his coaching career, Sundly enjoyed a seven-year professional career that saw stints in both the MLS and USL, and a few years spent overseas. Sundly was the 32^nd overall pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft back in 2014 being selected to the New England Revolution. During his rookie season the Revolution won an Eastern Conference Championship and was a MLS Cup finalist.

His USL teams included the Rochester Rhinos and the Real Monarchs where he served as the team captain. He followed his career in the states by playing for Hörvikens IF and Nosaby IF in Sweden, and FCA Darmstadt 04 in Germany. Sundly helped Hörvikens IF earn a promotion to the 4^th division in 2017.

As a Bear, Sundly appeared in 73 matches earning 55 starts and was named team captain his senior year in 2013. That same season he earned a spot on the All-Pac-12 second team and helped Cal maintain its status as the top team in the country for six-straight weeks. He was also voted the team's offensive player of the year and earned the coaches award.

He helped lead Cal to two NCAA Elite 8 appearances in his four-year career and helped clinch the Pac-10 title his freshman season scoring the game-winner against rival Stanford.

Under Ingrassia, Long Beach State has reached the elite eight of the NCAA Tournament, made seven NCAA Tournament appearances, and has won the Big West regular season or tournament championship nine times. The program’s Elite Eight run in 2011 was the deepest any Big West women’s soccer program has advanced into the postseason, and the program’s seven NCAA appearances under Ingrassia are the most of any coach in Big West history. This came from a program that did not have a winning record following the team’s reinstatement in 1998 until Ingrassia arrived.

Ingrassia, who has led the Beach to 15 winning campaigns, has compiled an impressive 198-134-52 overall record in his 19 seasons on the pitch. The program has beaten or tied a ranked program in 11 of the last 13 seasons as part of a schedule that annually is one of the toughest in the country. That schedule has also paid dividends regarding campus interest, as the program continues to set new attendance records, seeing 2,303 fans at George Allen Field in 2019 against UCLA.

2023 saw The Beach went 10-6-4 overall, with the non-conference slate being highlighted by a 3-2 defeat of No. 22. LBSU went 5-3-2 in the Big West play, advancing to the conference tournament where Long Beach State tied the eventual league champ, UC Irvine, before falling 4-1 in penalty kicks to UCI. Cherrie Cox was named Big West Offensive Player of the Year, leading seven Beach All-Big West honorees.

Looking to bounce back after just narrowly missing out on the Big West Championships the year before, Ingrassia’s squad posted an 8-7-6 overall record and 5-2-3 mark in Big West play on a run that got them into the Big West Championship match. Awards season saw striker Lena Silano earn Big West Offensive Player of the Year while Cox earned Freshman of the Year, headlining a group of five All-Big West honorees.

The Washington Spirit selected Silano as the 34th overall pick in the 2023 NWSL Draft. She was the second draftee in as many years after Kaitlin Fregulia went 12th overall pick in the 2022 NWSL Draft.

After COVID-19 canceled the 2020 season, Long Beach State overcame adversity during the 2021 campaign. Dealing with injuries to more than half of his starting lineup, including his 2019 leading scorer, Ingrassia led the Beach to a 9-7-2 overall record but unfortunately missed out on the Big West Tournament in the season’s final game.

Despite that, LBSU still had the Co-Defensive Player of the Year award winner in Kaitlin Fregulia and the Freshman of the Year in Maddy Perez. Six players named All-Big West included Silano, who put together a historic, record book-changing season, becoming just the ninth player in program history with ten-plus goals in a season.

The 2019 season was tough for Ingrassia’s squad, posting a 4-12-1 overall record and 2-5-1 in conference. The highlight of the year was sophomore center back Elysia Laramie, who led the team with six goals scored, eventually being named to the All-Big West First Team.

The Beach was the class of the Big West in 2018, winning a regular-season championship and a Big West Tournament crown to earn the program’s eighth NCAA Tournament appearance. Ingrassia was awarded his second Big West Coach of the Year honor following the season. LBSU’s Sarah Maher and Dana Fujikuni won the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year and Midfielder of the Year awards, respectively.

Despite season-ending injuries to preseason All-Big West selections Ashley Gonzales and Kaitlin Fregulia during the 2017 campaign, the Beach still posted an overall record of 9-6-3 and saw Fregulia honored as Big West Defensive Player of the Year for her efforts over just 14 games and six 49ers in total received All-Big West consideration.

Ingrassia’s charges went unbeaten through their first four games of 2016, including a 1-0 win over #11 USC, and then lost only one game on the way to the Big West Tournament. The Beach then dropped CSUN 1-0 in the semifinals before rolling to a 3-0 win over UC Irvine in the championship match, securing the program’s second straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Big West recognized six players from the 2016 team, and the Beach claimed three major honors as Ashley Gonzales was named the Offensive Player of the Year, Mimi Rangel was the Midfielder of the Year, and Chloe Froment was as the Freshman of the Year.

Ingrassia guided Long Beach State to its fourth Big West regular season title and fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in eight years in 2015. The Beach also advanced to the conference tournament final for the second straight season. LBSU opened the campaign on a high note, defeating No. 4 UCLA in front of a record crowd of 2,232 at George Allen Field. Six 49ers earned All-Big West honors, and three garnered NSCAA All-West Region accolades.

In 2014, LBSU went 8-7-6 overall and 4-2-2 in the Big West to finish third in the regular-season standings. The Beach then upset second-seeded Cal Poly on their home field in the Big West Tournament semifinals by playing to a 0-0 draw before advancing to the championship match on penalty kicks. It was Long Beach State’s fourth appearance in the conference finals since 2008. Long Beach State went 8-7-3 in 2013 despite a roster that featured 12 true freshmen, seven of whom earned multiple starts. The Beach picked up big wins at No. 23 Texas Tech and against 11th-ranked BYU. Mimi Rangel was tabbed the Big West Freshman of the Year and a first-team all-conference selection.

In 2012, Ingrassia reached a milestone as he notched his 100th career victory with a 2-1 win over Michigan. The Beach also picked up key non-conference wins over Baylor and San Diego to help them earn an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. It was LBSU’s third straight postseason appearance. Long Beach State closed out the campaign with a 12-8-0 record. Nadia Link garnered All-America and Big West Offensive Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive season. Link and Alex Balcer were also All-West Region selections, while Ingrassia saw seven players named to the all-conference team.

The Beach finished with an 18-6-1 overall record in 2011, the most remarkable season in program history. LBSU claimed their second-straight Big West Tournament title and advanced deep into the NCAA Tournament, reaching the Elite Eight with victories over No. 7 Pepperdine, Miami, and San Diego. LBSU also shattered the single-season school record for wins (18), goals (49), assists (52) and points (150). Nadia Link tied the individual single-season school record with 16 goals and became the first player in program history to earn NSCAA All-America honors. Shawna Gordon and Alex Balcer joined the link on the NSCAA All-West Region Team. In addition, Link and Gordon highlighted six 49ers on the all-conference team as they were tabbed the Big West Offensive Player of the Year and Big West Midfielder of the Year, respectively.

After being picked to finish sixth in the 2010 Big West Preseason Poll, Long Beach State exceeded expectations, claiming the program’s first Big West Tournament title to earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Beach tied the school’s previous win record, finishing with a 14-6-2 mark, and was second in the Big West regular-season standings at 5-2-1. Lindsay Bullock was named the Big West Midfielder of the Year for the second time in her career, while Bullock, Shawna Gordon, and Nadia Link were first-team all-conference selections. Bullock, Gordon, and Bo Rael were named to the NSCAA All-West Region Team.

Ingrassia spent little time building the LBSU program as his first recruiting class, ranked 15th in the nation, quickly paid dividends, going 12-5-3 in 2005. Hayley Bolt was named the Big West Conference co-Freshman of the year and joined Kim Silos as a Soccer Buzz Freshman All-American, firsts for the program, as were the national and regional rankings during the season. Even more impressive was the fact that upwards of eight freshmen were starters.

In 2008, LBSU went 14-5-4 and established then-school records in goals (44), assists (37), points (125), and shots (326). The record-breaking campaign, which saw the Beach go undefeated in league play at 7-0-1, culminated in the program’s third-straight Big West regular season title, its first appearance in the conference tournament finals, and its first at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Long Beach State racked up the postseason awards as Ingrassia was named the Big West Coach of the Year, Lindsay Bullock was named the conference’s Midfielder of the Year, and Liz Ramos earned top goalkeeper honors. In addition, the Beach placed 10 student-athletes on the All-Big West team, with Bullock and Hayley Bolt being All-West Region selections.

Ingrassia has mentored a handful of former players who have earned international honors. US Soccer invited Nadia Link to the U-23 National Team Camp in the fall 2011 and spring of 2012. Shawna Gordon also attended the U-20 National Team Camp in the spring of 2009, while Hayley Bolt trained with the U-20 National Team during the spring of 2005. Jenn Brooks and Mariko Strickland were invited to the 2007 Australian National Team camp.

In addition, Ingrassia’s players have been highly successful in the classroom as they have boasted one CoSIDA Academic All-American, eight CoSIDA Academic All-District selections, and 79 Big West All-Academic picks.

Before Long Beach State, Ingrassia won five state titles at Long Beach City College, the most by any coach in California history (1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003). The Vikings finished the season ranked in the nation’s top five in five of his final seven years, including a No. 1 ranking in 2002 and 2003. Overall, Ingrassia went 184-24-8 (.870) and ended on a 55-game unbeaten streak which began in October 2001. From 2000-03, the Vikings went an astounding 95-3-1 (.965), starting with a 25-2-0 record in 2000, followed by 24-1-0 and 24-0-1 marks. In 2003, they went 22-0-0.

LBCC won five South Coast Conference titles and made the playoffs eight times. The Vikings earned their first playoff berth in school history in 1996. During Ingrassia’s tenure at LBCC, the Vikings had three national players of the year (2000, 2002, 2003), nine All-Americans, 13 all-region selections, and numerous all-conference honors. Six players were also named the South Coast Conference Athlete of the Year.

In addition to his players’ accolades, Ingrassia was named the NSCAA/Adidas Junior College National Coach of the Year in 2003 and was tabbed the conference’s top coach three times (1997, 2000, 2003), as well as California State Coach of the Year five times. Ingrassia holds a USSF National “A” Coaching License.

Ingrassia graduated from Cal State Fullerton in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and earned his master’s in education at Azusa Pacific in 1998. Ingrassia’s playing days included two years at San Diego State (1989-1991) and another with the Titans (1993). Ingrassia is married to Barbara and has two daughters, Madison, and Ava.

Entering the 2023 season, his 17th as head coach of the Cal State Fullerton women’s soccer program, Brown has steered the Titans to five Big West regular season championships (co-2007, 2012, 2014, tri-2015, 2019) and six Big West Tournament championships (2007, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019) representing the league as the Big West’s automatic qualifier at the NCAA Tournament for three straight years (2013, 2014, 2015) in addition to the Titans’ postseason trips in 2007, 2017 and 2019.

The third head coach in the history of the Titan program hired in February of 2007, Brown has managed an 132-116-37 (.528) overall record and a 62-41-13 (.591) mark in Big West Conference play.

During his tenure, Brown has been voted the Big West Conference Coach of the Year on three occasions (2007, 2012, 2014), while tutoring two-time Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Year Rebecca Wilson (2014, 2015), three Big West Conference Defenders of the Year (Jenae Gibbens 2007; Morgan Batcheller 2015, Megan Day 2022), four Big West Conference Goalkeepers of the Year (Shayla Sabin 2007, Lindsey Maricic 2013, Jennifer Stuart 2015, Co-honoree in Morgan Bertsch 2017), four Big West Midfielders of the Year (Stacey Thompson 2007, Erica Mazeau 2013, Christina Burkenroad 2015, Atlanta Primus 2019), five Big West Tournament MVPs (Shayla Sabin 2007, Katie Pulliam 2013, Christina Burkenroad 2014 & 2015, Atlanta Primus 2019), one Big West Freshman of the Year (Megan Day 2019) and 73 all-Big West Conference selections, including 28 on the first team.

Since 2007, 20 Titans have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America West Region team, while following the 2015 season, Rebecca Wilson became the first Titan to receive first-team NSCAA All-America honors. Primus was a third-team NSCAA All-American in 2019.

Wilson is also the program’s first MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist, while Fullerton has had three players named a Senior CLASS Award candidate with one reaching the finals. Brown has also coached three Big West Scholar Athletes of the Year and 71 Big West all-Academic selections.

Brown served as an assistant coach at Cal State Fullerton for three seasons (2004-06) before being named head coach.

Over the last 18 years as both an assistant coach and head coach, Brown has helped the Titans to seven Big West regular season titles (2004, 2005, 2007, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2019), eight conference tournament crowns (2005, 2006, 2007, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019) and eight appearances in the NCAA Tournament - including a trip to the “Sweet 16” in 2005 a second round berth in 2006 and first round trips in 2007, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2019.

Prior to his collegiate coaching debut, Brown guided the Cal-South Women’s Soccer State Select Team to the George F. Donnelly Cup title in January of 2006, posting a perfect 4-0 record at regionals and outscoring teams from Massachusetts, Illinois and Tennessee by a combined 8-0 total to win the crown.

During the summer of 2011, Brown also assumed the reins of the Los Angeles Strikers of the United Soccer League’s W-League four matches into the franchise’s inaugural season and recently completed a full season at the helm of the club in 2012.

Brown came to Cal State Fullerton after spending five years as an assistant coach for the men’s program at UC Irvine under current Cal State Fullerton men’s soccer head coach George Kuntz, helping lead the Anteaters to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament in 2000 and coaching the 2001 Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Year (Saul Wolf).

His coaching experience also includes working with numerous club programs, including the Slammers FC out of Newport Beach, Calif., where he served as head coach for seven years, the Orange Junior Soccer Club in Orange, Calif., and, most recently, the Fullerton Rangers. Brown also was the boys head coach at Canyon High School in Anaheim, Calif., leading that school into the CIF quarterfinals in 2000.

A 1997 graduate of Cal State Fullerton with a degree in communications, Brown was a four-year letter winner for former Head Coach Al Mistri as a defender for the Titans from 1992-94 and 1996, helping Fullerton to the semifinals of the 1993 College Cup.

He was selected to the 1993 NCAA All-Tournament Team and was a two-time All-MPSF selection, finishing his career with four goals and three assists. Brown also competed in the 1994 U.S. Olympic Festival in St. Louis.

He currently resides in Fullerton with his wife, Gina, sons, Mathias, Xavier and Tobias, and daughter, Dalia.

Former California Lutheran University star goalkeeper Gabby Flores joined the Cal Poly women's soccer program as an assistant coach specializing in goalkeeping in the spring of 2023.

Flores, a member of the Cal Lutheran women’s soccer team from 2017-21, was a five-time Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Defensive Player of the Week for the Regals. In 2017 as a freshman, she helped the program reach the Sweet Sixteen in the Division III NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.

After graduating from Cal Lutheran in 2021, the Santa Maria native and Mission College Prep grad began coaching for the Central Coast United Soccer Club in San Luis Obispo in the spring of 2022. She also served as an assistant varsity coach at San Luis Obispo High this past season.

Flores said she’s had a strong relationship with associate head coach Scott Williams for a number of years and her ties to the area and the Central Coast United helped foster this opportunity to join the Mustang coaching staff.

“I’m hoping to bring lively energy,” she said, “and I hope to share and relate to anybody on the team, even if it’s just one person to just help them in their soccer journey and push the program.”

In 2018, Flores received All-SCIAC First Team honors, recording eight complete game shutouts for the Regals. That season, Flores entered postseason play ranked No. 1 in Division III in goals against average and save percentage. She allowed just four goals across 1,115 minutes between the posts and finished the year with 48 saves.

In her final season at Cal Lutheran in 2021, Flores was named All-SCIAC Second Team, posting seven shutouts, a 0.85 goals against average and a .815 save percentage across 16 starts.

Flores graduated from Mission Prep in San Luis Obispo in 2017. She was named Second Team All-League twice for the Royals and during her senior year earned Goalkeeper of the Year and First Team All-League honors. Flores also played for Central Coast United, when the club team was previously called the SLO Storm.

Flores, who assisted Cal Poly on a limited basis last season, said when her playing career came to a close, she knew she wanted to find a way to stay involved with the sport — so she started coaching.

“Soccer has always been there for me,” she said. “I’m not one to settle and I wanted to share my experiences.”

In 2018, Flores survived a tragic mass shooting at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks. That devastating event changed her perspective on life and pushed her to give back to soccer in her community.

“It made me realize I wanted to leave an impact someway somehow,” she said. “Now every time I show up here and every time I’ve shown up to coach kids I think about how lucky I am and how awesome it is to be able to share my experiences and lead the next generation of soccer players out of the Central Coast."

Flores is extremely grateful for this opportunity and is looking forward to helping the team reach new heights.

“I hope to challenge the program and I hope to challenge the goalkeepers most importantly,” she said. “I think they’ve had a great foundation of work, but I think there’s more to go and I think the limits have yet to be pushed.”

Flores earned a bachelor’s degree in communications with an emphasis in public relations from Cal Lutheran in 2021, and is currently finishing up her master’s degree in business from the school.

He holds a USSF “A” License and has coached D1 NCAA athletics at both Stanford University and Saint Mary’s College of California. While at Stanford he guided the Cardinal women’s soccer team to an elite eight finish in the 2002 NCAA playoffs and was named National Coach of the Year by Soccer America for this achievement. He also served Northern California as Director of Coaching, where he specialized in sport science and coach education.
